What do the letters P E Z stand for?

PEZ is a made-up name derived from the first, middle and last letter of the German word for peppermint, PfeffErminZ.

Who created PEZ and where?

The first PEZ candy was created by Eduard Haas III in 1927 in Austria. It was a peppermint candy.

What came first, the rectangular PEZ candies or the dispensers?

The first peppermint candies were invented in 1927. It wasn't until much later, in 1949, that the first dispenser was created in the form of a lighter.

Where are the PEZ dispensers and candies made?

PEZ candies are made an hour away from Vienna, in Hungary. The dispensers are made in both Hungary and China.
Quality and employee satisfaction are of utmost importance at all of our production locations.

How many countries sell PEZ products?

PEZ products are available in more than 80 countries worldwide. The range of products differs by country.

How many PEZ candies and dispensers are distributed every year?

70 million dispensers and 5 billion candies are distributed every year.

Why did the PEZ dispenser originally look like a lighter?

Eduard Haas III was a staunch anti-smoking advocate. With the PEZ dispenser and accompanying 'Smoking prohibited, PEZing allowed' campaign, he took up the fight against smoking.

How safe are PEZ dispensers for children?

Nothing is more important to us than the well-being of our little customers, which is why the safety of our PEZ dispensers is key. From the design of the dispenser and the raw materials used to production and final packaging, safety is of utmost importance to us.

In addition to undergoing numerous inspections during production, all dispensers are also subject to regular chemical and physical checks by external, accredited testing institutes in order to fulfil our strict specifications and ensure legally required standards.

All of our dispensers thus meet the minimum strict safety criteria of the EU Directive on the safety of toys (2009/48/EC) as well as European Standards on toy safety (EN71) and US Standards ASTM F963 for children above the age of 3, in the respective applicable version.

Naturally, the materials used to make the PEZ dispensers are suitable for direct contact with food, which is also regularly substantiated by migration tests on the materials themselves as well as regular checks on the finished dispensers in external, accredited testing institutes.

What was the first PEZ dispenser character for kids?

The first two dispensers for kids were Mickey Mouse and Donald. PEZ began cooperating with Walt Disney in 1962.

When a new PEZ dispenser is developed, is it automatically available worldwide?

No, individual country preferences are simply too different.
The decision as to which range is available in stores in which country is made together with our sales partners in the respective country.
The US is generally a completely independent market with its own subsidiary. Some ranges do overlap, but not all.

Do PEZ products contain gluten or lactose?

All PEZ products are lactose- and gluten-free.

Are PEZ products GM-free?

Yes, all products are GM-free.

Does PEZ use artificial colours and flavours?

Virtually all PEZ products are free from artificial colours and flavours!
PEZ Sour Mix is the only exception. Berry flavour contains the artificial colour 'Brilliant Blue FCF'. This is the colour that turns your tongue blue.

Are PEZ products organic?

We attach great importance to the quality of our raw ingredients, which are sourced from conventional farming.
